A conversation about shared streets at the inaugural Karp Strategies Learning Club The Karp Strategies team gathered with urban planning professionals, students, and others invested in the future of cities for a conversation about shared streets during the first edition of the Karp Strategies Learning Club. The group discussed two articles: “The Unrealized Potential of New York City’s Open Streets” by Transportation Alternatives, and “'Safe Streets’ Are Not Safe For Black Lives” by Destiny Thomas from City Lab in a conversation moderated by Ali Sutherland-Brown. While open streets policy and design served as the conversation starter, the dialogue quickly evolved to consider the possibilities for fair and just urban planning and the importance of centering community voices. Many concluded that the increasing demand for shared streets in the time of COVID-19 illustrates a need, more generally, for equitable and transparent planning that promotes meaningful public participation. As we partake in Open Streets locally in New York City and observe and advise trends nationwide, we are eager to hear what others are thinking and doing in this space. Thank you to all who joined us— what a robust conversation!
